History of the Lopatcong Emergency Squad

The Lopatcong Emergency Squad began as a facet of the Delaware Park Chemical Engine No. 1.  In 1939, the fire department purchased its first ambulance, a 1933 Henney from Stroudsburg Hospital, for $155.  This ambulance was also used as a utility vehicle for the department.  On Sept. 10, 1940, an agreement was made with Freihofer's Bakery on Park Ave. to house this ambulance / utility vehicle.  In 1946, the squad formed in an official capacity and was officially recognized as a first aid squad for fireman in 1948.  On October 25, 1949 the firehouse was accepted as a highway first aid station under the Phillipsburg Chapter of the Red Cross.  By obtaining this title, it assisted the organization with obtaining training and funding the purchase of equipment.  In the coming years, the organization would go on to purchase 2 Cadillac ambulances.  On May 24, 1955 the organization officially joined the Warren County First Aid Council.  In December of 1961, the township agreed to take over ownership of the company ambulance.  In September of 1962, the organization joined the 13th District of the New Jersey First Aid Council.  On October 10th, 1967, the Delaware Park Chemical Engine Company #1 voted in favor of the rescue squad incorporating as a separate entity and on November 30, 1967 the new squad came into official existance.
